The Department of Home Affairs charges a Visa Application Charge (VAC) for every visa application. The base fee is for the primary applicant. Each accompanying adult adds 50% of the primary fee, and each child under 18 adds 25%. Most fees are indexed to CPI and adjusted on 1 July each year.
The VAC isn't the only cost. Plan for: skills assessment fees (A$300-1,000), English tests (A$340-440 per attempt), health examinations (A$300-500 per person), police certificates (A$42 in Australia + varies per overseas country), Overseas Student Health Cover (A$60-80/month for 500 / 485 visas), and any migration agent fees if you use one.
Most visa fees must be paid in AUD. Banks typically charge 3-5% above the real exchange rate on international transfers. A A$4,865 skilled visa fee paid via a bank can cost an extra A$150-250 in hidden FX margin. Services that use the mid-market rate with a transparent fee avoid that hidden margin.
