ABF Cracks Down on Migrant Worker Exploitation in Far North Queensland
Australian Border Force conducted enforcement operations in Far North Queensland identifying unlawful non-citizens and disrupting worker exploitation. The operation resulted in detentions and visa cancellations.
Official source ↗The Australian Border Force (ABF) and partner agencies conducted a four-day enforcement operation across Far North Queensland in June 2026 targeting migrant worker exploitation and unlawful non-citizens. Officers conducted 180 status checks, located 25 persons of interest, and identified 12 unlawful non-citizens. Six unlawful non-citizens were detained for removal from Australia, while six others were issued bridging visas requiring them to depart or lodge valid visa applications within a specified timeframe.
The operation identified unsafe living and working conditions, including unlawful workers at a tobacco store and a property housing 13 people in squalid conditions. Intelligence from the operation was also referred to authorities investigating illicit tobacco operations. Four disengaged Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme workers were identified and referred for support services.
Employers who breach migration laws face serious penalties including infringement notices, civil prosecution, and potential declaration as a prohibited employer. Home Affairs emphasises that migrant worker exploitation, visa system abuse, and unlawful non-citizen involvement in criminal activity will not be tolerated.
