ABF cracks down on migrant worker exploitation in Far North Queensland
Australian Border Force has detained multiple people involved in exploiting migrant workers and abusing Australia's visa system. The operation targeted scam agents, illegal labour schemes, and trafficking networks.
Official source ↗The Australian Border Force (ABF) has completed a major six-day operation in Far North Queensland targeting the exploitation of migrant workers and abuse of Australia's visa system. Four unlawful non-citizens were detained for removal, and a fifth person was issued a Bridging Visa with strict conditions requiring them to leave Australia immediately.
The operation found serious offences including a suspected migration scam agent who charged vulnerable Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme workers to lodge fake Protection Visa applications—sometimes without their knowledge. Other criminals encouraged PALM workers to leave their approved employers, then exploited them through illegal cash payments, squalid housing, and conditions described as modern slavery. The ABF also located individuals allegedly trafficking migrant workers and using violence to force them into illegal work.
Home Affairs worked with Queensland Police, the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations, and the Office of Industrial Relations to conduct unannounced visits across Cairns, the Atherton Tablelands, and the Cassowary Coast. According to Home Affairs, this operation sends a clear message that Australia will not tolerate visa system abuse or migrant worker exploitation.
