Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) to be reformed from 2029
The Australian Government is changing how the Adult Migrant English Program works from January 2029. The new model will focus on migrants with the greatest need for English language support.
Official source ↗The Australian Government announced changes to the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) in the 2026-27 Budget. A new AMEP business model will start on 1 January 2029. According to Home Affairs, the updated program will keep flexible teaching options and strong student support services to help migrants improve their English, find employment, and settle better in Australia.
The government is proposing targeted changes to who can access AMEP. These changes aim to focus the program on migrants who need structured English lessons the most. Home Affairs has not yet released full details about the new eligibility requirements. The current eligibility rules will stay in place until the government completes its legislative process.
If you currently use AMEP or are planning to apply, you should not expect changes until January 2029. Home Affairs will publish more information about the new eligibility requirements as part of their legislative process.
