Official source ↗Australia is celebrating Refugee Week 2026 from 14-20 June, coordinated by the Refugee Council of Australia with the theme 'A Million Stories'. This milestone marks that Australia has now accepted one million refugees and humanitarian entrants since the end of World War II. The Department of Home Affairs acknowledges this significant achievement and the contributions refugees have made to Australian communities. 2026 also marks the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention, the key international legal document protecting refugee rights. Australia was involved in drafting this convention and ratified it in 1954, with obligations implemented through the Migration Act 1958. Since then, Australia has welcomed refugees from around the world. Australia maintains one of the world's leading humanitarian resettlement programs, with 20,000 places in 2023-24 - the highest intake since 2012-13.
