The Australian Government has announced new migration reforms aimed at reducing Net Overseas Migration and preventing people from misusing the visa system. Net Overseas Migration has already fallen 47 per cent from its 2023 peak to 292,000, and the government plans to bring it down further to 245,000 this financial year and 225,000 in 2027/28. According to Home Affairs, these changes are designed to attract skilled workers Australia needs while ensuring the system is fair and orderly.

Key changes include: stricter rules on student visas to prevent visa hopping and limit secondary applicants; visitor visas will now include a 'No Further Stay' condition to stop people using them to extend their time in Australia; tougher action against migration agents who help people lodge applications without merit; and priority processing for skilled workers in key sectors like healthcare, construction, education, and agriculture. The Working Holiday Maker Program will also introduce a ballot system for years two and three with a regional work requirement.

Visa applicants should be aware that compliance checks are being strengthened and people without valid visas may be required to leave the country. Home Affairs recommends ensuring your visa application is genuine, complete, and meets all requirements. Processing times for some visa types, including Working Holiday Maker applications, are being standardised.
