Heavy vehicle industry crackdown on visa breaches and worker exploitation
Australian Border Force launched a national operation targeting visa violations and migrant worker exploitation in the heavy vehicle transport industry across multiple states.
Official source ↗The Australian Border Force (ABF) and National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) conducted a week-long joint compliance operation in April 2026, checking over 200 heavy vehicles across South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. ABF officers verified visa status and identified migrant worker exploitation, while NHVR officers inspected vehicle safety and compliance standards.
During the operation, ABF officers cancelled three student visas for breaching conditions, issued three Notices of Intention to Consider Cancellation, and counselled nine drivers on their visa requirements. One unlawful non-citizen who had been in Australia illegally for over 12 years was identified driving a heavy vehicle. Employers also faced action, with five compliance notices issued for employing unlawful workers or those with incorrect visas, and five additional employers under review.
According to Home Affairs, employers who exploit migrant workers now face serious consequences including up to two years' imprisonment and substantial financial penalties under new laws. The ABF plans to continue and expand enforcement activities with further checkpoints, mobile patrols and surveillance across the country in coming months.
