New Genuine Student requirement for student visas from March 2024

Student visa applications lodged from 23 March 2024 are assessed under a new 'Genuine Student' requirement instead of the previous 'Genuine Temporary Entrant' test.

Home Affairs has introduced a new Genuine Student (GS) requirement for student visa (subclass 500) applications lodged on or after 23 March 2024. Applications submitted before this date continue to be assessed under the previous Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement.

To meet the GS requirement, all student visa applicants must demonstrate they are a genuine applicant for entry and stay as a student, and that studying in Australia is their primary reason for applying. A key change is that the new requirement recognises genuine students may later apply for permanent residence - this future intention no longer counts against applicants.

When applying, you must answer questions in the online application form about your current circumstances (family, community, employment ties), why you want to study this specific course with this provider, how the course benefits you, and any other relevant information. Responses are limited to 150 words per question and must be in English. You should also attach supporting documents to your ImmiAccount, as Home Affairs gives more weight to statements backed by evidence.
