New Processing Priorities for Skilled Visa Applications from July 2026

Home Affairs has updated how skilled visa applications are processed, replacing the previous prioritisation system with Ministerial Direction 119 from 25 July 2026. The new system prioritises applications based on two factors: the occupation type and whether you are in Australia or overseas when you apply.

The highest priority goes to law enforcement and defence occupations, followed by construction, healthcare, and teaching roles. Within each occupation category, applicants already in Australia are processed ahead of those outside Australia. This means an applicant in Australia in a priority occupation will be processed before someone overseas in the same field.

The new priorities apply to Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186), Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (subclass 187), Skilled Independent (subclass 189), Skilled Nominated (subclass 190), and the Skills in Demand (subclass 482) visas. According to Home Affairs, all applications currently on hand are assessed under these new priorities.
