Student visa cancelled after child abuse material found

Official source ↗On 23 February 2026, Australian Border Force (ABF) officers at Adelaide International Airport found 21 videos of child abuse material on a Chinese national's mobile phone during a baggage examination. The man held a student visa and was planning to study early childhood education in Australia. He was issued a $660 infringement notice, his visa was cancelled, and he was detained and removed from the country on the next available flight. Home Affairs notes this is part of their ongoing efforts to protect vulnerable people in the community. Between January 2024 and December 2025, ABF officers stopped over 435 potential child sex offenders at Australian airports. Travellers whose visas are cancelled under these circumstances may face re-entry bans of up to three years, or permanent exclusion from Australia.
