Temporary restriction on Iranian Visitor visa holders entering Australia
From 26 March 2026, Iranian passport holders with Visitor (Subclass 600) visas outside Australia are temporarily restricted from travelling to Australia for 6 months. Some exemptions apply.
Official source ↗The Australian Government has introduced a temporary travel restriction affecting Iranian Visitor (Subclass 600) visa holders who are currently outside Australia. According to Home Affairs, this measure comes into effect from 26 March 2026 and will remain in place for six months. The Government says this is to protect the migration system, as the conflict in Iran has increased the risk that some temporary visa holders may be unable or unlikely to leave Australia when their visas expire.
The restriction only applies to people outside Australia holding a Visitor (Subclass 600) visa linked to an Iranian passport. It does NOT affect people already in Australia, immediate family members of Australian citizens or permanent residents, parents of children under 18 already in Australia, or people holding any other visa type.
People wanting to travel despite the restriction can request a Permitted Travel Certificate through the Home Affairs website, considered on a case-by-case basis. Those who started their journey to Australia before 26 March 2026 will generally receive a certificate automatically. New visa applications can still be lodged and will be assessed on their merits.
